No EPOC from Emotiv?
by Cerebral Cortez on May.06, 2009, under News

In today’s economy, it seems there is a tight rope act being preformed financially by most companies to keep themselves afloat, and as a reader has brought to my attention, this may be the case for Emotiv, creator of the EPOC BCI headset.
In a fairly recent (read: 03-09-2009) Dr. Michael Schuette, creator of OCZ’s Neural Impulse Actuator has had reason to believe the hopeful BCI manufacturer Emotiv has possibly run out of time and money to push their product out and clues to its reason being that it simply doesn’t work. He also states that it was second hand information, and that he does not wish to spread rumors, but to be honest, with several setbacks announced by Emotiv, it would be no surprise (albeit a very very sad one) that this may possibly be the case.
The Dr is quoted as saying “…one of their vendors talked to me trying to get some business from OCZ because allegedly Emotiv went out of business.” And then further on continues on regarding a possibility why by saying “…I know one thing, which is that their approach cannot function.” He also makes sure that it is stated that it is second hand information (one of Emotivs own former vendors) and that he is not trying to be negative or trying to spread rumors. Michael is a great guy, and very helpful to the OCZ NIA community, so I can 100% believe his intentions in saying this was not inflammatory, but purely informational.
I’m waiting to hear back from the Emotiv camp and will update this post when/if I hear something substantial about this.
Stay Tuned.

I have been researching BCI 's for the last 3 years and have seen emotiv just stall and stall, epoch's BCI interface is just an EEG monitor , i had a look at the sdk lite which i downloaded and I have to admit was seriously immature for what they were trying to achieve. The SDK was absolute rubbish, I cant risk spending $500 when emotiv want all the profits for themselves (licences), which is totally unreasonable, The more i realise it , the more of a con they are.

I approached Neurosky years ago and they were the same. They tried selling me a headset and SDK for $5000. I have never laughed so much in my life I have been in contact with gtec.at but, their products are extremely expensive(but are legitimate medical equipment manufacturers).good thing i can buy the OCZ nia , looks like i could extract EEG data and link it to algorithms within my code. SDK would be great , but i will be looking at writing my own code. The trick is to isolate the EEG and E.cog data. If i cant get what i want out of the NIA , i will then buy a cap and connect electrodes to my head and download EEG acquisition software free and use MATLAB and Simulink (free for students), I think $500 is an absolute rip off. I will not be wasting my money.

I have been following emotiv's BCI development for about 18 months. I downloaded their SDK lite. I have to admit , it was rubbish. emotiv have stalled release of epoch for a long time. Now they want $500 for a headset that is just a glorified EEG cap. The licencing agreements are a laugh, develop and get ripped off , it seems all they want to do is rip people off. I seriously think they are a con.

Neurosky are also in contention of ripping people off. I asked about 2 years ago for a SDK and headset , they wanted $5000. I couldnt believe it, I have never laughed so much. What is awesome is that a kid could create a headset with electrodes , use an amplifier and use Matlab , Simulink and some coding time and wallah , a working BCI. EEG and E.cog data acquisition software can be downloaded free. OCZ NIA are the only ones who have released a commercial BCI.I will look into it.
